Featured Member - May 2004

Being
totally unable to find anyone else to be our featured member
for May 2004 I have turned in desperation to ...... me!
Yes, your featured member for May is Vic Adam.
Unlike
most of those previously on this page I had no particular early
interest in theatre. I certainly enjoyed live theatre as a member
of the audience but in my early years in Perth there really
wasn't much in the way of amateur theatre - at least not that
I knew about. It wasn't until 1986 that I had my first onstage
experience. My daughter was appearing in a production of "The
Sound of Music" and I was asked to take the part of Franz,
the butler. It wasn't a huge part but I was also roped in to
do props so I found myself extremely busy backstage when I wasn't
actually onstage. I think my major claim to fame (notoriety?)
in that production was when, after 8 straight performances,
I was so tired that I not only forgot my lines but also forgot
what suitcases were called in one memorable scene.
It's
not surprising then that I never again appeared onstage until
in 1992 my wife told me that Melville Theatre Company were auditioning
for the play "Murder In Company". She suggested I
might enjoy it so I auditioned (for Val Riches, who was directing),
got the part and, as they say "the rest is history".
Having
once heard the applause I was, of course, totally addicted.
I have appeared since then in far too many plays to itemise,
although a few memorable ones come to mind - "The Boyfriend",
"The Kingfisher" and "The Shifting Heart"
are probably my personal favourites for Melville. I even tried
Stage Management once - and swore "never again!"
I
also joined the ranks of the Committee in 1993 with the intention
of only serving for one year. After acting in various capacities
for the next five years I finally learned to say "No"
and became just another member.
I
have some great memories of many aspects of my membership of
the Melville Theatre Company. Not only the acting and the applause
of the audience but also set building and demolition, painting,
Front of House, impromptu sing-alongs (theatre people have no
inhibitions I'm delighted to say) and, most of all, some wonderful
friendships. Thank you to all my fellow members.
