Featured Member - December 2003/January
2004

Last but not least for
2003, our featured member for December is Di Ryman.
Di has been a member of MTC for
over 10 years and has loved every minute of her involvement
with the company. A native of Wales, it was singing in school
choirs and a series of eccentric English Literature teachers
that gave Di her first taste of stage life. Her first English
teacher (physically reminiscent of Cruella de Ville!) forced
this shy 9 year-old into the role of a mad witch in the school
Christmas Panto. Screaming curses and cackling like an old crone
released the innate Thespian and she was shy no longer! Various
roles in school plays, especially Sheridan and Shakespeare,
cemented her love of theatre but it wasn’t until she emigrated
to Western Australia that she was able to give full rein to
her theatrical inclination.
Di is proud to say she was one of the founder members of NATS
(Newman Amateur Theatrical Society) in 1982 along with Les Hart
and two other MTC members Val Riches and Ian Ferguson. A few
years of Music Hall with St Michael’s Anglican Church
in Booragoon gave her a wide variety of roles ranging from a
Kalgoorlie ‘lady of the night’ (played with great
gusto!) to wild pirate to numerous comedy skits. Di has also
acted at the Old Mill Theatre. Her debut role at MTC was in
“When We Were Married” and since then Di has played
in numerous productions such as “Sinbad”, “Stepping
Out”, “Trial by Jury”, “Cole”
and “Out of the Frying Pan” for which, together
with Siobhan Donald, she won an award at the ITA Dramafest for
dealing with a difficult text.
Di has served in a variety of MTC Committee roles over the years
and loves to be involved in all areas of the theatre. Lighting
and sound technician, costumes, front-of-house, set building,
painting and decorating whatever needs attacking with a paintbrush,
it’s all part of the terrific teamwork needed to keep
our community theatre going and she loves it all.
A truly committed member of our Company.
Thank you Di!
