Featured Member - July 2005

By
way of "keeping it in the family", the featured member
for July is Desiree Goodchild.
Born
in Hammersmith Hospital, West London and raised in North Kensington,
Desiree married David in 1966. The whole family (including a
daughter by that time) emigrated to Western Australia in 1969.
After a three and a half year stint in the East they returned
to Perth.
Desiree
spent most of her working life as a Dental Nurse/Receptionist
but also tried her hand at being a Veterinary Nurse which, as
an animal lover, suited her to a tee. It was much later that
the idea of writing a play took her fancy. She joined the Australian
Writers' Guild and, through them, she met Dawn Murray who asked
if Desiree would like to help her with a play that Dawn was
directing at Melville. The "helping" turned out to
be Stage Managing the one-act play The Sex Life of Snails.
Desiree quickly found out just how much she had taken on!
However, with a lot of coddling she managed to pull it off and
found herself hooked on community theatre. She has since been
ASM for Where There's A Will and, once again, SM for
Dangerous Obsessions.
But
what became of the play she wanted to write? Well, she did write
it. It was either a 3 Act, or possibly a long 2 Act play and
she was told it would be very difficult to produce. Having now
experienced theatre at first hand she can understand why! She
plans to modify it "one of these days" but in the
meantime has written a novel. One day she plans to do something
about having it published too.
Let's
hope that when she does modify her play she gives Melville the
first option to produce it. In the meantime, thank you for all
your efforts, Desiree. And keep on managing that stage!
